How Residential Care Works

At Beattie Home & Hospital, we recognise that transitioning to residential care is a significant decision, and we’re here to support you and your loved ones.

Here’s an overview of how our residential care process works:

Step 1 - Assessing your or your loved one's care needs

Determining the appropriate level of care begins with a comprehensive needs assessment. This evaluation helps identify the type of support best suited to individual requirements. You can initiate this process through a referral from your General Practioner (GP) or by directly contacting your local Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) team - where they’ll refer you to get a DSL assessment. This is an assessment on all things mobility, cognitive and medical to help us care for you or your family member.

Step 2 - Exploring types of aged care

The needs assessment will determine the type of aged care required. We offer the below care options:

Rest home care
Hospital level care
Dementia care
Respite care
Day stay care
Palliative care

Understanding living options and costs

After identifying the suitable care type, it’s essential to consider available accommodations and associated costs:

 Daily Care Fee

The amount every resident is required to pay for Aged Residential Care Services is set by Te Whatu Ora Health NZ, and the amount is the same for all residential care facilities within the specific district. Rate increases set by Te Whatu Ora occur on the 1st of July every year. Our Daily Care Fee covers accommodation in a standard room including key things such as: all meals, laundry, housekeeping,
activities, visits from our local GP or in-house registered nurses, certain Pharmac-funded prescribed medications, and assistance
with transport to some health service appointments. Our Accounts team can provide in more detail other items covered in this fee.

Premium accommodation costs

Premium rooms with enhanced features like ensuite bathrooms, larger rooms or private balconies may be available at an additional cost. These expenses are not covered by the government subsidies and must be privately funded.

Residential care subsidy

Depending on your financial situation, you may qualify for a government subsidy to assist with the daily care fee. Eligibility is means-tested, considering your income and assets.

Hospital and dementia care have a higher daily care fee, but provided Health NZ criteria are met, a top up subsidy is provided to cover the difference.

Residents receiving the Residential Care Subsidy will redirect most of their Superannuation payment toward the cost of care. If care is paid for privately, Superannuation payments continue as usual.

Step 3 - Making the Transition

Once you’ve chosen your preferred care option and understood the costs involved, we assist in facilitating a smooth move:

Pre-move visits: We encourage you and your loved ones to visit our facilities, meet with our team and familiarise yourselves with the environment.

Getting DSL assessment and power of attorney paperwork sent to Beattie Home & Hospital as chosen place of residence.

A helpful way to transition over time could begin with residents joining our Day Stay Care or having Respite Care stays to familiarise residents with the Home and our staff.

Personalising your space: Our team will help set up your room with personal belongings to make it feel like home.

Settling in: On move-in day, we’ll be there to welcome you, discuss any preferences and develop a personalised care plan tailored to your needs. Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and supported as you integrate into our community.

At Beattie Home & Hospital and Papakāinga Homestead, we are committed to providing compassionate and personalised care ensuring that our residents feel at home in a supportive and nurturing environment.
