Our History
The story of Beattie Home is a testament to unwavering community support. In 1986, when the local maternity home closed, visionary community leaders recognised an opportunity to create a place where elderly residents could receive care while staying close to their families, friends, and familiar surroundings. Inspired by this vision, Beattie Home opened in 1988 with 27 beds, named in honor of Dr. Beattie, one of the town’s earliest and most respected doctors.
Over the years, the community’s continued support has been instrumental in turning that initial vision into a reality. In 2004, the Wilshier Centre was added, providing an exceptional activity lounge for residents. The Kowhai Wing, with its 9 ensuite rooms, was completed in 2016 to further expand care options. In 2021, the Papakāinga Homestead facility opened as a state-of-the-art, self-contained dementia care unit, addressing the growing need for specialised care in our community.
We’ve continued to enhance our facilities with significant upgrades, including several rooms fitted with overhead hoists, a new bathroom block, and a upgraded nurses' station. We are currently working on refreshing our reception and office area, as well as creating a new waiting lounge and an additional bedroom for the Kowhai Wing.
“Without the community support Beattie Home would not be what it is today.”
