Our History

The history behind the current Beattie Home is one of unswerving local community support, both financially and in voluntarily. When the local maternity home closed in 1996, community leaders saw the opportunity to develop a home that would provide care for the elderly residents, keeping them close to their family, friends and familiar environments. Beattie Home, named after Dr. Beattie, one of the town’s earliest doctors, opened in 1988 with 27 beds.

Community support has seen that initial vision expanded over the years, with the Wilshier Builing, an amazing activity centre, built in 2004, The Kowhai Wing, with its 9 ensuite rooms in 2016 , and the most recent Papakaianga/Homestead Wing in 2021. This is a self-contained, high specification dementia home, caring for a growing need in our society.

“Without the community support Beattie Home would not be what it's today.”
